Teacher Complaint: Joan Parks - Marshall Elementary
My daughter fell from the playground equipment on 11/15/11 and landed on her right arm. She was sent to the nurse, the gave her an ice pack and sent her to class. After a short time passed my daughter informed her teacher that her arm still hurt and her teacher refused to allow her to return to the nurse. We did not receive a phone call or an incident report regarding the fall. When she arrived home her arm was swollen with some slight discoloration to her elbow. I took her to urgent care and it was found that she did not have a break in her arm, just a bad contusion. She was placed in a sling for a week with restricted activity. This same teacher denied her bathroom privileges 6 weeks into the school year, two times on the same day, forcing our daughter to eliminate waste in her clothing, then she sat in it all day as she was too embarrassed to inform her teacher. After discussing the current situation with the principal, he informed us that the teachers are allowed to make "judgement calls" based on whether they believe the child needs medical attention regardless of there lack of medical training. We requested that she be removed from this teachers class and placed in another class as we feel that this teacher is neglecting our child. Thirty minutes after leaving the school we received a phone call from the principal informing us that she could not be changed to another classroom as this would affect their school funding, but that they would switch her to another school in the district and provide busing for her with no charge to us. First of all, the school receives the same funding regardless of which classroom she is in, and only by changing her school would that affect funding. We don't feel that it is fair for them to make our child change schools when it is clear that this teacher is neglecting our child's physical and medical needs. We don't feel that this teacher is competent to provide for the safety and well-being of not just our child, but for other children. If we can't advocate for the safety and well-being of our child when we place her in school who is supposed to provide that care when she is not with us, then who will do this?

I know it doesn't feel this way, but the Administration is actually helping you by providing a way out since many would like to have this option. One of the reason we have bad teachers in the system is because parents usually fail to report them officially.
I hope your little one gets better!
P.S Not all teachers are like this woman and real teachers do care for the little ones in all aspects of their lives.
