Teacher Complaint: Marilyn Umlauf - Ashland Area El Sch
On Monday, the 14th of December, and my daughter's first day at North Schuylkill Elementary, she came home and informed me that she had gotten yelled at for speaking out in turn, threatened that she could go to the principal's office, and that she was made to apologize to the kid whose turn it was. She said that she thought it was her turn to speak, so she did.
On Tuesday, the 15th of December, my daughter came home and I asked her how her day went. She started getting visibly upset and said that her teacher yelled at her again. Saying that her teacher said " I don't know where you're from but in Pennsylvania we don't write like that. You need to write exactly like everyone else in class". We went immediately down to speak with the principal. He said that he would talk to the teacher, and have her get in touch with us. Later we decided to write the letter to the teacher. The letter has been copied down verbatim for reference.
On Wednesday the 16th of December, at 8:30 am we received a phone call from the teacher. As I had not slept the night before at all, I asked that we could talk later. She said ok and I hung up the phone. She then called later, about 10:30 am. She was clearly irritated and acted like I was beneath her. I told her that my daughter had told me what was said, and she denied it. She said she didn't remember saying that. She said that in 3rd grade the children are expected to write in full sentences. I asked her about her reprimanding my daughter on her 1st day and she told me that my daughter needs to know the rules. I told her " don't you think you could give her a few days to get used to everything, at which point she attempted to talk over me. I told her that I wasn't speaking further with her, that I will not be talked over and that I would see my daughter transferred to a different class. I told her that in fact I would be there in a few minutes. I hung up on her. We immediately got in the car and went to the school. We walked in and I told the secretary that I needed to have my daughter called down and that I needed to speak with the principal. She went and talked to to the principal, coming back saying we could go to his office. My daughter came shortly thereafter. We told him what had transpired and what was said on the phone. I was quite upset and he asked my daughter a few questions. I asked that my daughter be moved out of her classroom to another. He refused and said that it was school policy not to move students out of classrooms unless due to health risks. I assured him that if this was to be repeated it would be detrimental to the health and welfare of my daughter's teacher, in no uncertain terms. He said that he had talked to her teacher and that she had denied everything said. He said he would deal with the situation and if there was found a problem with the teacher he would handle it. We accepted that and returned home to await the phone call he'd promised to make once he talked with everyone.
At approximately 2:45 pm the principal called our home and first spoke with my husband and then myself. Informing us that he had spoken with 4 students that sit around Kaitlyn and that 3 of the 4 said that they'd heard nothing, while one had said that the teacher had told Kaitlyn to be quiet when another student was speaking. He said that he forsees no further issues as that would be stupid on the teacher's part. I said fine, thank you. Kaitlyn informed me when she got home that 3 of the 4 students had indeed heard what the teacher had said but they were too afraid to say anything to the principal. It is blatantly clear that this woman has an issue with my nevada born daughter. My husband and I will be monitoring the situation closely. Any help resolving this issue, with hopeful removal of my daughter from this woman's classroom would be greatly appreciated.
