Teacher Complaint: Suzanne Galyen - Battle Creek Elementary School

This teacher is not only rude to the parents and children, but she is down right mentally abusive to my child. My child has come home from school on multiple occasions crying because she has been humiliated, outcasted, and degraded by this woman. This teacher has segrigated my child out by telling her "You cannot look at my special books because you have bad handwriting." She proceded to have my child sit by herself writing her alphabet and her first, middle, and last name over and over while all of her peers got to look at this teacher's special books. My child believes she has terrible handwriting when infact she has nice hand writing for a first grader. This teacher continuously fills these children's papers with red ink (for one incorrect spelling word, she will circle the word, put a check mark by it, and put MULTIPLE question marks beside it), she puts frowny faces on their papers, counts spelling words wrong if the word is spelled correctly, but one of the letters is not formed perfectly (by her standards) and talks rudely to these children about the work they have completed in front of their peers (completly humiliating them). I have spoke to many other parents whose children have had her in the past or currently have her as a teacher and have not heard one positive comment about her. They have made complaints about her for years and this woman continues to teach our children. Several of the parents have said because this teacher is tenured that nobody can do anything about the way she treats our children. I have followed the "chain of command" by first addressing these issues with the teacher in parent teacher conferences at the beginning of the school year. When I made the comment that "I just think that all this red ink is hard on a child's self-esteem." She stated in a very rude tone "Well, I can use a different color of ink?". I went to the Principle on 3 occasions with very specific complaints about her and showed him the papers my child was coming home with. Each time he agreed with me that the way this teacher was acting and grading was inappropriate and made me believe he would handle it. The first time I complained to him, he told me he never addressed it with her stating, "I dropped the ball, I put the stack of papers in a folder and forgot about them. I am sorry." With trust that he would address it the next two times, I subjected my poor child to this teacher for how long now. With no improvement, I took matters to the Superintendent. He spoke to the Principle, who now for the 3rd time (should be the 4th time, but he "forgot" the first time to speak to her) addressed the issue with this teacher and still the teacher continues with this inappropriate behavior. My next step is the State Department of Education and the School Board.
