Teacher Complaint: Amanda Bhansali - Wheeling High School
I understand you're trying to make sure your students know everything they need to know for the next test in your AP World History class and thus require them to do flashcards for each unit, but expecting your students to do 60 flashcards detailing the who, what, when, where, how, and why in full sentences in one week on top of all of their other homework is insane! Most of the terms are stuff they'll have to know for your class and won't have to use again after they're done with your class. The average student in your class does about 6 flash cards in one hour, so it'd take them 10 hours to do all 60 of them! Don't you think that's a bit excessive for high school students? Most college courses these days don't force students to make flashcards for every unit, so this doesn't prepare them for college, unless you're trying to turn this into a time management exercise. Your students have lives and other things they could and should be doing during the 10 hours they waste doing your stupid flash cards. They have other homework they have to do. They also have non-academic things they do. They don't want to be going to bed at 2 AM on a school night after spending hours doing both the homework from your class and the rest of their homework or spending 10 hours of their weekend (especially when the weather is nice) doing flash cards.
You also haven't apologized to your students, especially the Indian and Deist students in your AP World History class. You bashed every religion that believes in a higher power and failed to mention any religion in the class other than Islam and your own atheistic beliefs. How about discussing religions other than Islam and your religion in class? Aren't they just as important to world history? You also stated you don't understand Indian people, yet you're married to an Indian man and were trying to help your Indian mother-in-law during a session when you claimed you were trying to help your students learn what they didn't know for the test that over 1/2 your class failed! You also tried to cover the fact that over 1/2 of your class and the other AP World History class failed that particular test by lying to parents and your boss (the division head) when you were confronted on it. Shame on you, Ms. Bhansali! Your behavior and the ridiculous amount of homework you give earns you an F- in my grade book. You deserve to be fired. WHS is a school that is all about diversity, acceptance, and making sure the students have what they need to succeed. Students and teachers are supposed to believe and follow those principles. As a teacher, you clearly don't fit that label.

First of all, the claim that she assigns 60 notecards a week is absolutely absurd. We had about 80 notecards per unit, but around one month to do them. Furthermore, the idea that the average student completes 6 notecards in one hour is patently ridiculous. We could, when working quickly, generally average around 2 notecards every 3 minutes. This would be about 40 notecards in 1 hour, not 6.
Furthermore, we never found Mrs. Bhansali (or Sowa as we knew her) to be intolerant. For one thing, bashing her "atheistic" beliefs simply does not make sense. As she explained to our class, she is mainly a deist-she believes some sort of power created everything but no longer interferes in life. If you're going to insult her at least don't make up the charges.
Long story short? Mrs. Bhansali wasn't my favorite teacher, but she was a good teacher. This complaint unfairly sullies her reputation, and I will not stand for it.
