Hi-

although this complaint was posted years ago, I feel obligated to say how wrong it is. Mr. Schwartz is a wonderful teacher. He can be insensitive at times, but is always well-intentioned and very helpful. He does not intend to humiliate students, and almost always acknowledges something positive before even beginning to talk about the negative. In the time that I have known him, I have never once seen him yell, and I'm sure that whatever he said to your son was not cruelly intentioned at all, although, from what it sounds like, you haven't given him the opportunity to explain himself. He most certainly does not take pleasure in making students feel small so that he can feel good about himself, and even the thought that you would find that "obvious" is so utterly ridiculous that I'm having a hard time taking anything you've said seriously. He does not "relish" his control, and grades are usually not an issue in his class, unless your son has consistently done absolutely nothing. He grades based on effort, not skill. The teenagers that he's closest with are the ones who put forth the most effort, and he has NEVER been inappropriate with a student. It may "appear" that he has an "inner circle," but that couldn't be further from the truth. The teenagers he's close with are the ones who make an effort to befriend him. It is unfortunate that people bully each other, and assumptions and appearances are usually to blame.

I agree with what the last person said. Mr. Schwartz doesn't purposely try to bring people down. A lot of the time he's giving educational criticism. It's an acting class. To be an actor you must be strong and honestly, the criticism helps build character. Also he compliments then criticizes, and then lets other students say what's on their mind. I find a lot of what he says helpful. He doesn't yell. Different teachers have different ways of teaching and maybe this just wasn't a good fit for your child. He specifically told us that he grades on effort not skill. Everyone's skill level will be different and it's not fair to have grades that may be judged against another student's work. Even with group projects he will have a section for an individual's effort. He also is not inappropriate with students. I cannot even imagine how you got that idea. He doesn't have an inner circle. This "inner circle" would be children that think they are an "inner circle". Mr. Schwartz has nothing to do with this. The teenagers he is close to are the ones who want to be close to him. They want to befriend their teachers and are likely to be in conservatory. This would be the people he will be seeing a lot because they want to pursue acting and he happens to be the acting teacher.
