Teacher Complaint: Amanda Bhansali - Wheeling High School

I never thought I'd have to say this about a teacher. You're extremely strict, ignorant, and bad at teaching! That's quite a combination!

You're too strict to the point that you threatened to give the students in your AP world class detentions if they didn't show up to do a review session with you during their study hall periods. Why'd you have them do this? Because over half of them had failed that particular unit test you'd given them! It turns out that you weren't really doing anything during those sessions. You just told them to work ahead or do make-up work they needed to do while your talked on your cell phone to your Indian in-laws! How about helping these kids? Maybe you're the one who should have gotten a detention for not helping them learn the information they supposedly didn't get on the test? Also, you give them too much homework. They're up until 1-3 AM almost every night during the week, leaving them tired. Many of these students are only getting 2-5 hours of sleep each night during the week. They should be getting 7-10 hours of sleep each night.

You stink at teaching. On the test you required the review sessions for, over half of the students in both your class and the other AP world history section (which is taught by a different teacher) failed that test. It isn't because they didn't study or study appropriately or goofed off. It's because you and the other teacher didn't teach them what they needed to know for that test! When a parent contacted you about this issue, the homework amount, and about the study sessions, you and the social studies division head tried to cover up everything by denying that it even happened. According to you and the division head, over half of the AP world history students didn't fail. Only 30% did. That parent didn't buy it, and neither do I. I also don't believe your story that you're giving your students an appropriate amount of homework. For your class, they should have half an hour to an hour's worth of homework every night, not 2-4 hours for your class and maybe half an hour to an hour's worth for their other classes. You need to keep in mind that these kids are taking several other classes, not just your class. Also, it's not smart to lie to parents or family members who call about their concerns for their students in your class. They'll catch you 95% of the time. They're not as dumb as you and the division head seem to think they are.

You are extremely ignorant. You've spent several units on the Muslim cultures and very little time on any other religions. I know it's not a religion class, but if you're going to talk about one religion, you might as well talk about them all equally. In addition, you've bashed Christianity and several other world religions by saying that they're wrong because your beliefs are the only correct beliefs. WHS promotes diversity and acceptance of different beliefs. If you can't do those two things, you shouldn't be teaching. You should quit and find a new job that allows you to be as ignorant as you want. You've also told your students you don't understand Indian people, yet you're married to an Indian! If you don't understand your own husband, then why'd you marry him? Are you always this ignorant or is this just a phase you're going through to see what sort of reactions you'd get from your students?

I seriously hope you change these bad habits and develop some better habits. Maybe it is time for you to find a new job because teaching (especially at a very diverse school) doesn't seem to be a good career match for you.

I read the word "ignorant" in your post several times. Apparently, you are the one who is ignorant. When you are taking an AP class, you should expect at least 2 hours of homework per night for that class. You are trying to earn advance college credit. If you are whining about homework load now, I would recommend not going to college.
