Teacher Complaint: Sarah Huston, 4th Grade Reading, Lang. Arts, Social Studies - Whitehall Prepartory And Fitness Academy

Mrs. Sarah Huston, a first year teacher, at Whitehall Prep and Fitness in Columbus, Ohio made several inappropriate comments, verbally abused my son in front of my 14-year-old son and me, on April 1, 2011. I had been telephoned because my 9-year had left his lunch money and when I arrived at the school to pay it and pick him up, I was asked to go see Mrs. Huston. I went upstairs with both of my sons and proceeded to knock on her classroom door. After a brief conversation regarding my son's attention she proceeded to tell him "I am tired of hearing from you, ‘I don’t know…I don’t remember.’ …. You do NOT need to come back to this school, you obviously are only wasting everyone's time." She made a few more comments before I stopped her. I was mortified, hurt, and taken completely aback by these remarks directed to my son. I asked her if she knew what she was doing and told her that those statements were completely not appropriate for her to say to a student or a parent (those conversations are for principals and parents behind closed doors). This is not a comforting atmosphere for any child to be in, especially when our educators are supposed to partner with parents to create an environment conducive for learning NOT fear. My husband and I have learned that she is consistently yelling at the students, according to my son, and I did hear her screaming when she went back into the classroom as I walked away from the classroom door.

Well, unfortunate as that may have been, did you take it to the Principal?? What did she or he say?

Yeah it isn't the best way for a teacher to communicate, but teachers are people too, and they make mistakes. Some of my friend's kids have had similarI think I would weigh most on how the admin responded - if you bothered to tell them. If you brought it to their attention, and they sat and listened to you, and were willing to fix it, then its not the end of the world...

Do you even know what the teachers today have to put up with? In Houston, they have teachers teaching behind a fencelike barrier. And you are worried about a few negative comments?

Yes, I too read the article, and it had some good perspective on how parents (especially in the inner city) love to "rescue" their kids.

If they really want to rescue them, then let your kid face the music once in a while!

I agree with the article above. Students never want to hold accountability for any actions that occur in the classroom and parents always blame teachers when things "go wrong". Parents are always quick to point fingers. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe your child isn't as perfect as you think?
