Teacher Complaint: Ms. Hoffman - Northmont High School
This teacher gives students two passes per quarter to be used for restroom use. Our son completed one of the passes and approached the teacher, who was lecturing at the time. He asked whether he could be excused to use the restroom and the teacher advised that he could not. He told her he really needed to go and she told him to return to his seat. He advised that he really, really needed to go and then told her he was going to have to go anyway. We're talking about a high school senior here and not a child that may not know what sense of urgency is required. Already embarrassed about having to approach the teacher in front of the whole class, he didn't want to go into detail about which bodily functions needed attending to, but I'll just say it was something that couldn't wait. He was assigned two detentions, one for "disruptive behavior", and one for "insubordination". This also happens to be his favorite class and he would not have approached the teacher had it not been absolutely necessary. We spoke with the teacher who refused to budge on his punishment. She advised the situation made her look bad and caused her to "lose merit" with the class. When asked if this was out of character for our son she replied that it was. She advised that he is well liked, she has a good relationship with him, and he had not been disruptive in the past. When asked what he should have done in this situation, she advised that he should have "just waited". As every reasonable and logical adult knows, certain bodily functions cannot "just wait" and must be attended to with greater urgency than others. When we told her that he needed to go urgently she replied "Well, it wasn't like he was jumping up and down or anything". Come on now! They expect students at this age to act like responsible adults, yet if they need to use the restroom they're only to be taken seriously if they behave like a six year-old? She advised that he had missed class recently due to an illness and she took that into consideration as well. I'm not sure how that's relevant to the control of one's bodily fuctions or how so many factors were taken into consideration during a span of mere seconds. It appears to me the only concern of this teacher was her "image" and she had no concern for embarrassing a student. She gave the impression that she couldn't have cared less whether a student suffered the humiliation of soiling themself, so long as it disn't disrupt her. After this experience, I'm convinced that had just sat back down and soiled himself he probably would have gotten into even more trouble. My thought is that he probably would have gotten the detention for disrupting class and then may have been disciplined for a dress code violation or "inappropriate behavior". Every contact we have with this administration just leaves us with more head shaking disbelief.
