Teacher Complaint: Jane Woith - Central Jr High School
There are two reasons I am writing this complaint: First of all, I need some closure for this incident; secondly, I do not want ANY child to ever have the harrowing experience that I did. I know it may initially seem ridiculous that I am writing this ten years later, but that is how damaging the emotional impact has been.
It all began on October 3rd, 2002, two days before my birthday. We were a month into school, and we were turning in study guides signed by our parents for extra credit. We lined up at the desk and were handing them in to Mrs. Woith. When I got to the front of the line, someone had to talk to her in the hall for a moment, so she told us to turn in the papers when she got back. Since I was at the front, I decided to simply leave my paper on her desk.
When she came back, she noticed immediately. She waved the paper around in front of the class, saying that "SOMEone forgot to turn in their extra credit. Come HAND it TO ME." Then, when no one reacted, she kept trying to get me to come to the front of the class, backing out of the room before saying "Last chance."
I was as confused as the other students until a classmate pointed out that she was talking about me. Then, I was flustered, terrified, and humiliated. I began sobbing in front of the entire class, though the next impatient teacher that day was also unsympathetic.
This was not the end. My mother saw my distress and went to talk to Mrs. Woith. However, the latter's argument that I was "too immature" because I was "young for my grade" (I had skipped a grade." She laid the entirety of the blame on me and refused to acknowledge that she had gone too far. Then, any time I did something incorrectly for the rest of the year (such as follow directions incorrectly), she would chide me in front of the entire class. One time she even accused me of stealing a piece of tissue paper from a popular girl in the class. The girl subsequently discovered the piece of paper under her desk. I pride myself on being an honest, trustworthy person and she had absolutely NO grounds for accusing me.
Sometimes Mrs. Woith would literally begin the class by humiliating me. She would say "We're going to follow directions today, right, Greta?" It became a self-fulfilling prophecy; she expected me to make mistakes, and because my self-esteem was still rather brittle, her lack of confidence in me caused me to doubt myself and make mistakes.
I wish there were an option to include a range of dates when this bullying occurred, because it was constant. I entered the school each day dreading the hour I would be belittled and harassed. I was not able to live in peace without fear of being humiliated, and I was so young that I will remember the lasting, painful impact of Jane Woith's unprofessional behavior forever.
As a concluding note, I would also like to mention that Mrs. Woith opines politically during class. On multiple occasions she raved about George W. Bush and even forced our class to write letters praising him as an assignment (if the letter was not positive enough, she would not allow it to be sent).
Is this appalling? Absolutely. Is it necessary to express this for my own welfare and the protection of future students? I believe so.
Please consider investigating this woman's behavior. Most of all, if other children express anguish, please let their voices be heard.
