Teacher Complaint: Mrs. Brown And Mrs. Snyder - Arovista Elemenary

January 4, 2010

Brea Olinda Unified School District
1 Civic Center Circle
Brea, CA 92821

Subject: Jade Vaz, 6th grade student at Arovista School

I'm the mother of Jade am writing this letter with hope that a change will be made. When President Obama spoke in his campaigning, he mentioned teachers. He said we need to get rid of the bad teachers and I couldn't agree with him more. At the time, I was dealing with, my son Steele's, 3rd grader teacher Mrs. Snyder and what an awful teacher she was. He survived the 3rd grade with counseling and was fortunate to have a wonderful caring teacher this year in the 4th grade. Though that ordeal could not have prepared me for what Jade and I and our whole family are going through this year with his 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Brown.

I had choose to hold Jade back in the 5th grade. From kindergarten to 3rd, Jade was an A-B student. In the 3rd grade, Jade suffered a traumatic event with his grandparents, police were involved. His grades dropped and it has been a struggle. He attended Mariposa and because I was holding him back I asked the district to move him to another school for his sake of possible embarrassment. He was in Mr. Books class, a great teacher, but still continued to struggle. He has now moved to the 6th grade with Mrs. Brown and the situation with this teacher is getting to a point I believe to be dangerous. He began coming home telling me that she is very mean to him and a few other kids. I at first thought he was exaggerating, but he then taped how she would speak to him and others and I was horrified. This is complete abuse, as a parent I would be arrested. She is bully. Most of the time she yells at him in front of the whole class, which is so dangerous emotionally for Jade. This tears down his self esteem. He is left feeling beaten, no different then her hitting him. Just this week, she was yelling at him and my 4th grader walked in the room to see why Jade was taking so long to go home. When my 4th grader got into the car he said that Mrs. Brown was so mean, she was yelling at Jade so bad. This happens every day. He is not a bad kid, he is kind, does not talk back and would never hurt anyone or anything. He may have trouble focusing or fiddles with his pencil, but please no child deserves this. I have had to set up counseling every Wednesday and will now set up additional counseling for him to understand its not him, its her that's wrong. Teachers should not be like this. He feels I am letting this abuse happen and is showing signs of emotional hurt. He cries often and has become numb. He told me not to worry, its okay, the yelling does not bother him anymore, which scared me even more. He sees I am loosing my hair and showing other signs of stress as I can't get anything done to stop this. You will see in the attached emails I have pleaded to the Principal and nothing has changed. If I didn't hear from more then 3 people of how she treated Jade and other kids, along with the tape recordings, I wouldn't be contacting you. The Principal even said, she had been told of this happening in class by others.

Jade has not been allowed to a single assembly or any kind of fun activity. He spends most of his days sitting in the Principals office, not in class, which he likes because he does not have to take the abuse from Mrs. Brown. This is not what school is, I don't pay taxes for my child to sit in the principals office everyday. He sits there, misses whats happening in class, has it to take home as homework, doesn't understand it and is sent to the Principals office the next day for a missed assignment. Don't forget the yelling and belittling in front of the class first. Also, no recess and after he eats lunch he sent to detention. No art projects and now this week he could not do Gigi (not sure of spelling). No classmate birthday party or anything. The last day of school before Christmas vacation, he texted me to come pick him up from school. They were having their class party and he was excluded and didn't even know why. How do you do that at Christmas, what kind of sick person is she. He was sent to the office, so I did go to pick him up and spoke to the Principal and asked how she could allow this. She told me that the 6th grade teachers make the rules and there was nothing she could do. I asked if he could be moved to another class, she said no.

Please take the time to read the emails I have attached and know there are many other conversations with the Principal also. I pleaded and even cried for help. Jade's counselor said doesn't this teacher know that what she is doing can impact or change Jade for life. I ask your help in making some kind of change. Mrs. Brown cannot be like this to Jade or any other kid.

I feel she has been teaching to long and has lost the compassion needed to teach. Just as Steele's teacher last year, Mrs Snyder. These teacher have been teaching 20 + years. The system is laying off the fresh minded newly certified teachers, due to there seniority. These teachers have new ideas and are excited to be with children, teach children and enjoy the challenges. Kids are so different now and these old teachers don't understand these times. Myself and my husband work for Bank of America. The bank surveys their customers and makes needed changes constantly. Customers don't come close to how important our children are. Does the district ever survey the students or parents? The bank would dock my salary for a negative survey results, by which I have never had. How does the school district get feed back? I hope not only by what the teacher has to say.

I apologize if you may think this letter being unappropriated, but this is my little boy, I didn't do anything last year with Mrs. Snyder and I cannot let down a child of mine again.

Sincerely,
