Teacher Complaint: Ms. Peters - Northmont High School

This teacher called this evening to advise that our son would given a zero on a cooking project that took place in mid December. The teacher made accusations that our son had copied his recipe and work from another student. Our son advised her at school that she could call home and verify that he had done the work himself. She advised that "parents will often lie for their children." My wife took him to the store to purchase his ingredients and he cooked the meal for us that evening. The project required that he take samples of the meal to school the following morning. We will not lie for our children and have always instilled in them the value of character and integrity. This is the third time school personnel have implied that we were lying. The school philosophy with us has been that because you can't believe everyone, then you can believe no one. This is the second time in matter of weeks that our son has done exactly what was requested, yet suffers consequences. She advised that all recipes had to be approved in advance, yet we're getting called a month later? We were advised that the whole project would have to be re-done due to "plagerism" or he would receive a zero. The students were copying recipes from classroom cookbooks, so if they chose the same recipe, obviously they were going to be the same. Once again, the kids must be held accountable, but the school will accept no responsibility for their own failures. Our whole experience with this school has caused me to wonder how many others have suffered the consequences of their flawed logic?

In Ms. Peters' defense she did allow the students to re-do the project and did indicate that maybe she wasn't clear enough in her instructions. The issue remains that assume the worst and think any parent that complains is "covering" for their child. I'm sure this isn't exclusive to Northmont and is more indicative of the sad state of public education. The fact that the supreme court declared the state's funding formula unconstitutional more than a decade ago really tells the tale. I realize that teachers and adminstrators are in a tough spot, but I really feel for the students (and their families) that still value character and integrity.
