Teacher Complaint: Ms. Pauline Cheng - Wylie East High School
The teacher in question here, Ms. Pauline Cheng is a Mathmatics teacher at Wylie East High School in Wylie, TX.
On Nov 17th, 2011 Ms. Cheng told her 1st period AP Calculus class that they were being exempted from the next on Fri Nov 18th because she trusted this class to study over the Thanksgiving holiday. Then at 10:22 pm, an e-mail went out to all students regarding the test the next day. That e-mail has been copied and pasted below:

If you choose to take the test tomorrow, you will take the easier version. If you wait until Monday after the Thanksgiving Break, you need to come in after school to take it and it will be a more challenging version – because you have more time to prepare for the test!

That very next morning, the students were informed that they had the option to take the test on Fri or on Mon after the break. Of course, most of the students in that class chose not to take the test that Friday. My assumption is that it must have upset Ms. Cheng at that point because the following e-mail went out to all of the parents of the students who chose NOT to take the test until Monday:

I just want you to be aware that you child chose not to take the Pre-Calculus test before the Thanksgiving Break today. Please remind him/her to prepare for the test. Please remind him/her that he/she will take a different version of the test after school on Monday. Have a great Thanksgiving Break. Miss Cheng
As you can see, what was sent to the parents does not resemble what was sent to the students. My largest complaint is that the students were exempted, and then told that they would take a more difficult test, and that no class time would be given. All students taking the test on Monday would also have to come after school. I think that this is unfair to the students.
When speaking to the principal and assistant principal at WEHS, I was informed that this was a one off incident. When I asked to have to some sort of policy put in place requiring that all teachers give their students 24 hours notice when changing a test date that was publicized to the students, I was told that they would not put a policy in place for a one off incident. I then informed them that I had the same complaint regarding another child of mine and this same teacher the year before. I was then told that they could not/would not speak to what happened the year before. I then asked if I could file a formal complaint that would be part of the teachers permanent file. I was then informed by the AP Dr. Edge, that the only permanent file a teacher has would be her notes & impressions of Ms. Cheng as Dr. Edge oversees all Math teachers for the school. How are we parents to establish that this teacher makes arbitrary decisions regarding major test dates if we can not file a complaint and it be attached to the teachers file thus establishing a pattern?
I would like everyone to know that in the Wylie ISD teachers are apparently able to change their mind regarding test dates with no prior notice (unless you call an e-mail @ 10:22 pm prior notice). I would like other parents to know that the teachers who are educating our children have no permanent records. That complains parents and students make against teachers are not being recorded in any place.
The principal and the assistant principal insist that the test to be taken after the break will be "...just as rigorous as the first..." and that class time will be given on Monday to take that test. Also, it seems that the teachers can lie to a student in an e-mail, and in my opinion, bully the students into a taking tests that they may not have been prepared for because they are being treatened with having to stay after school and having to take a more difficult test. All of this after the teacher EXEMPTED them in the first place.
I thought we paid teachers to teach our children. Lying and bullying is not a lesson that I wish my children to learn. I do not want my children to learn that when you are in a position of power over others, that you can abuse that power however and whenever you wish. I want my children to learn that everyone makes mistakes, but with mistakes come repurcussions. I want my children to see that people in our country have a voice, and that someone somewhere will hear their pleas and help right a wrong that has been commited.
All I asked for was a policy preventing this from happening to another student and for a mark on the teachers permanent record in order to establish a pattern. I guess that is just too much to ask for though...
