Teacher Complaint: Eric Latham - Pathway At Ucla Extension
(Let me preface this by saying that this is a two-year postsecondary certificate program for students with disabilities, and that as of the date that the incident occurred, I did not know that this website existed. The incident is also ongoing.) I have a friend who is a first-year student. Her roommate, a second-year student, always steals things from her and the other people in her apartment unit. Everything from Q-tips to food to money. You name it, she's stolen it. Eric Latham, the director of the program, just turns a deaf ear to the complaints. He seems to use the second-year's disability (I heard that she may be bipolar) as an excuse not to discipline her in any way, shape, or form. I am sorry, but if one does something wrong (such as stealing), the disability, no matter what it is, should not protect the offender from punishment. This student is a thief and needs to be kicked out of Pathway and punished SEVERELY. My friend has a right to feel safe in her own apartment -- a right that she has been denied from day one. I care about her way to much to let her live in fear. He pretends that the problem does not exist. He apparently cares more about making money than about the safety and well-being of his students. The way that Latham is running Pathway has done irreparable harm to the program's reputation (as well as Latham's reputation)and the program's chances of survival. In fact, I think that Pathway may not be long for this world if it keeps being run so poorly. I give the program three more years of existence tops. Latham needs to step up to the plate and fix this serious problem, and stop accepting students who do not know right from wrong. If the prospective student cannot prove himself or herself to possess this knowledge, that should be enough to IMMEDIATELY disqualify the person from any consideration of being accepted into the program, or if this is not discovered until the student is accepted, the result should be IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL.
