Teacher Complaint: Mr. Kaltenbach And Mr. Caras - Northmont High School
Once again, Northmont has taken the high road, not, and imposed a harsh disciplinary action due to a senior prank that took place in the hallway between classes. A number of students, well over 20, had obtained water guns. Being young and seniors, they thought it would be fuuny and use those toys in the hall. Or course, this caused a disruption for a few moments. Students began to run out of the way of the water.
My senior and nine others were caught on video with said water toys. Others made a get away from the camaras. I was told by some of the boys that over 30 toys were handed out at random in the halls and students just grabed a gun and ran. Thankfully, no one was hurt or injured during the moments of havoc.
Now, I will agree that there must be action taken on this disruptive behavior, or course.
These students recieved a 10 days suspension.
I was told by Mr.Caras and Mr. Kaltenbach the "what ifs" the "what could have happened" and that was what the students were punished for. Not, what actually took place but, what could have happened. They were punished on theroy.
Now, I don't know about you but, I punished my childern on what they did and not on what they could have done.
Let's use their logic for a moment. If I am driving a car that is registered to do 150mph. A officer can pull me over doing the speed limit and give me a citation because, my car CAN speed to a 150mph, I could wreck and hurt myself or someone else. I could have out ran said officer etc....... Could've, should've, would've.
In a court of law I am pretty sure you are tried on facts, not theroy.
Northmont is famous for their over-stepping. The zero tolerance policy they have has zero logic, for the most part. Northmont comes off looking like a bad parent with a bad attitude. We all know the kind, the parent that will scold a toddler for spilling their milk, smack a child who forgets to take out the trash. That is the impression I get from Northmont. That kind of punsihment is not corretive, it is demeaning. Childern tend to turn away from a parent that over corrects.
That is simple logic. I DO believe that a child thrives on discipline.
When given in the correct doses. Bulling would be another term used to discribe this behavior at Northmont.
Every year there are senior pranks. I was reminded of such from both Mr. Caras and Mr. Kaltenbach. Every year, year after year, after year.
I am sure it will come to a point in time they will have those children arrested for a toy water gun in school.
No one was remotely hurt. Thank the Lord. It could have been worse, yes. But it wasn't.
Please, address this High School and every other school that behaves in such an order. Zero tolerance can command zero respect to those that impose it. Yet, Northmont will preach fairness. I have yet to see it.
One last note. I mentioned this matter to a friend of mine who is a
counselor at another area high school, a private high school. She was dumbfounded. Her first words were "that zero tolerance was crap". My thoughts aswell.
