Teacher Complaint: Rita Swift, Principal - St. Patrick, Smithtown
The school held an awards ceremony for the 8th grade graduates and about 15 out of 64 of students were excluded. I understand the academic awards, which require certain criteria. However, there were many awards for "citizenship", "character" and the like. Many students won several awards, while others got nothing. I would not object if only 25% of the students received awards, and only the students receiving awards were invited. Yes, my child - who works hard, has never been a discipline problem and participates in school activities - was one of the left-out students. The students who were left out, along with their families, had to sit through a demoralizing ceremony in which they were treated as if they didn't matter.
The current principal plays favorites. She has dismissed parent complaints about bullying.
The principal refused to meet with me to discuss my concerns about the award ceremony. When I asked her if my child was considered for any of the awards, she responded with "all students were considered for each award". When I asked her-twice-why only a few students were excluded, she did not respond.
For the record, my husband and I have been active in both the school and the parish. All of our children have attended this school.
