Teacher Complaint: Mauro Garza - Anderson H S
The date above was chosen to mark one specific incident, where Mr. Garza assigned two students to detention, for "insubordination." This was on the day of the TAKS test, where the students had a 30 minute class period, and both had their work sitting in front of them. When the students weren't working near the end of this class period, without warning, they were assigned detention.
Throughout the entire school year however, Mr. Garza has obviously been "playing favorites." Giving students he prefers good grades for sub par work, and students that he dislikes worse grades, for work that is of a higher quality. Up to this point, Mr. Garza's harassment has been ignored.
Mr. Garza's actions towards students could only be categorized as unacceptable. For students that it is obvious that he dislikes, Mr. Garza acts very rude. Constantly singling them out for nothing whatsoever, treating those students with extreme disrespect. Not allowing them to move onto the next part of a project, constantly pointing out wrongdoings in their work, even insulting the students.
However for the students Mr. Garza does like, it is a life of ease. One specific example of his favoritism: The students were assigned to make 3D blocks of certain letters, then paint them with a design. Two students each just painted their letters a base color, and turned them in with no design. One student, that Mr. Garza obviously likes, received a 95, the other student, received a 70.
On top of all of his unacceptable actions, Mr. Garza limits creativity, even though he teaches in the Arts. He forces students to draw/paint/make things in his own way, not allowing students to experiment with different styles, and destroying what art is, and should be. His expectations for the class, those of complete silence, are also ridiculous. How are students supposed to build up their already limited creativity if they can not discuss ideas for their project with their surrounding peers? And on top of his required silence, if students do speak, they are assigned detention.
Mr. Garza has also, on multiple occasions, held the entire class after the bell for upwards of 4 minutes, causing practically every student to be late to their next class, and receive an unexcused tardy.
Mr. Garza puts a black mark on the entire Anderson High School Fine Arts department, and has no place in the teaching world if he continues on as is.
