Teacher Complaint: Weslie Whatley - Calera Elementary School
I feel discriminated against by Chelsea Park Elementary School in the Birmingham area of Alabama. I am divorced and my two children live with their father who remarried an empolyee of CPES. On their first day of school I was outcast by most of the personnel, which I found to be extremely unprofessional. I have taught school for 10 years in Alabama. I was perplexed by the gossip and attitude of many of the teachers, administrators, and counselors. I felt very unwelcome and was glared upon by many as I would visit the school. Needless to say the courtship between my x and Ms. Weslie was longer than their marraige, which ended in a nasty mud-slinging divorce. Protection orders were filed so my children's father could no longer pick them up from after school care, where Ms. Weslie works. I took over that responsibility. We felt for the best interest of our children that they no longer attend after school to avoid conflict with Ms. Weslie. I followed the procedure to change our children to car riders by personally going to the school with the request. I was denied, and files were kept from me about my children. And was denied the opportunity to speak to the principal. I had to check my children out of school that day instead of simiply allowing them to be car riders. Their reasoning was their father had to personally show his ID although they had spoken to him on the phone and received his consent. He explained that Ms. Weslie had filed a protection order and if he came to the school she could have him arrested. They had no symphothy. It seemed as though it was a consipracy to lead him to the school just for that reason. I would hope not. I found it ludicrous that my children had to miss 3 hours of instruction that day, altough they didn't mind. Their father sent a note the following day and nothing was ever mentioned again about him personally showing identification. My x husband is an engineer with a prominent company and is well respected in the community. We were married for 12 years and he never layed a hand on me. She simply lied and did many more times and used her authority at school to discriminate against my family and try to make things hard on us and my kids. I do not believe individuals of her kind should be allowed to work with children. It is evident she does not have their best interest at heart. During this time she also changed the bank draft to my x husbands after school account. He would no longer receive the discount rate allowed to employees and their spouses. When he filed for divorce she took it upon herself to notify the Shelby County personnel department that they were no longer married and the after school tuition was raised. When I called to question the matter I was told that no documentation was presented to prove divorce nor marriage. The bookkeeper simply took her word and changed his bank draft. I asked for dates when the discount began and ended. I was told and I quote, "I can't get in the middle of this, you will have to speak to my supervisor who is out of town until the following week". I left a voicemail for the supervisor but never got a response. Although she did follow up with my x. He asked me to drop it after speaking to the supervisor who informed him she would talk with Ms. Weslie about her behavior and guarenteed she would be reprimanded if she did not comply. But he never got the documentation I wanted. So I guess this is the good ole boy system? I know my complaints seem frivolous, but it still bothers me almost a year later that the institutions that touch the lives of children daily allow such behavior by those in charge. I guess there are bad apples in every bunch.
