Teacher Complaint: Mrs. Mary A. Potamis - Boston College High School

I am a parent who has used the website ratemyteachers.com many times to review teachers, whether or not they are good or bad, and the only flaw of this website is that teachers can delete negative comments when they want to be portrayed as positive. The problem I have run into is that she has been deleting a total of 51 negative comments dating all the way back to 1994, portraying herself as a great teacher, when in actuality, she is not. Here is my son's experience with this teacher: From the very beginning, this woman hated my son, treating him like an illiterate idiot, without him doing anything to harm her. She gave my son illegitimate grade after grade, zero after zero after zero. We ignored my son's complaints about her not being able to teach at first, and we hired a tutor, followed by a second, then a third, and then a fourth. At the complete extreme, for a period of six months, we had four tutors at one time, all full-time, with individual focus on my son. We spent a total of $81,000 on tutors my son's sophomore year, and my son did a minimum of four hours of chemistry every night, and this took away from his other subjects. In a nutshell, this evil woman failed my son in Chemistry, when finally, he met justice in summer school, when he had a fantastic, clear, honest, and fair teacher Alfred Navarrete. To this day, My son still hates her, and when she sees my son in the hallways, she looks at him with a grimace, but she had absolutely nothing to hate him for. In the end, my son was right, this woman was filled with malice, she was condescending, egomaniacal, and malicious. This woman put my family through so much pain and suffering, and I am sure she will be spending all of eternity burning in hell.

In my experience, Ms. Potamis was not only an excellent teacher (she brought my grade up from a B to an A-) but is also an excellent example of a genuinely kind woman who always puts her students first. I visited her many, many times, both before and after school, and always felt that I had a better grasp on the material than when I walked into our extra help sessions. Ms. Potamis would never be so petty as to hate a student, or go out of her way to make someone's life miserable. It looks to me like your son was merely not qualified for the vigor of an honors chemistry class, and perhaps should have been placed in a lower level class. If your son failed, he did so because he deserved the failing grade. I stand behind Ms. Potamis,as a student who loved her class, and as a human being who is strongly irritated when cowards spread lies because they can't have what they want 24/7. If I were you, I would take my son out of BC High, because you (and your son) clearly do not understand what it means to be a man for others, a human being of integrity and compassion, and based on what you've said, I would say that Ms. Potamis deserves a spot in heaven, not hell, for tollerating your immature and foolish behavior.

I had Mrs.Potamis sophomore year for Chemistry Honors, and I honestly have never had a better experience in a science class. She was kind, helpful, a great teacher, and patient with her students; I have no idea how anyone could complain about her. I maintained an A average throughout the year, which although it was admittedly a difficult class, was not impossible because of the work Mrs. Potamis put in. Chemistry is a difficult subject, and sometimes it does not click with a student immediately. Honors Chemistry, obviously is ever more of a challenge. Mrs. Potamis worked with all of her students to help us out and to do our best. She made a difficult class fun, and she simplified many challenging notions with her knowledge of Chemistry and life experience (e.g. baking cookies). I have not a single complaint about Mrs. Potamis. She was a great teacher. I earned an A in the class, got a 760 on the SAT II, and plan on taking AP Chem next year. If someone is not up to the challenge of taking a higher level course, it is not the teacher's fault for giving him bad grades. Being in the complaining mother's son's class, I can honestly say she never once showed malice towards any of us. She actually said to us at the end of the year, "You guys were such a good class that I am extending my teaching career another year before retirement." Chemistry is not for everyone, and just because your son didn't understand it at first glance does not mean that Mrs. Potamis is "malicious" or "condescending." She is a kind woman, with a heart of gold, and clearly just from midyear and final results is a great teacher.
