Teacher Complaint: Mrs. Lehr - Junction City Sr High
My child has experienced two unfair quizzing sessions in this woman's class. The first one was quite a few weeks ago, probably at least a month ago. The teacher's quizzes are always oral. She says something out loud, and the class must write down the English translation, French translation, answer to the question, etc., whatever it is. First, let's get a little background information on this French teacher. I'll start by saying this woman's French pronunciation is sub par. In fact, her entire knowledge of French is slightly "off." She consistently misspells words (we have access to actual French dictionaries that can back me up on this...), she speaks and teaches French with a horrible American accent, and her knowledge of vocabulary seems to be very faulty- she always has to tell other students when confronted about wanting to know a certain word beyond the scope of that current lesson, "Oh, I don't know; I'll have to look it up later!" There are countless subtle and not-so-subtle bits that you can hear about that show you her incapability of teaching French. Here's an anecdote she herself said in class- she was in Paris, asking directions, when the police officer immediately recognized her as an American by her accent, and responded in English. Perhaps this would be excusable if she didn't have to constantly divert other students' simple questions concerning simple vocabulary she should know... So much for "I've been doing this for so-and-so years now." Interesting. So, she was dictating numbers for the class to translate, and my son did not hear one of these numbers. Immediately after the test, he raised his hand and asked for a repeat. Typically, to other students, especially when the repeat is requested right afterwards, she will simply oblige and repeat what the student asked for. However, with my child, she refused to repeat, simply and rather rudely saying, "I'm done." This is some kind of insane reverse-favoritism; she has never, ever, done this to another student- yes, I have asked my son. Today, there was another one of these tests, or quizzes... This time, yes, due to the teacher's inadequate direction, my son accidentally did not turn in his note-card quiz. When attempting to hand it in, just a minute after the turn in, the teacher said, again, very rudely, "That's not my responsibility. I already collected them." I do understand my son's slight error. Yes, he should have been more attentive. However, I do not agree with the penalization of not getting a grade entered in at all, just because of that. It is far too severe to do that. It's a quiz, for pete's sake. Not some 10-point homework assignment. Oops, she never give out homework???? (Part of her strange philosophy- staunchly anti-homework.) I do not know of any other teacher that will give a flat-out zero for inadvertently turning in a quiz a minute later. I know that this unfairness is personal or emotional, because my son is a 4.0+ student who will put life and limb on the line to get a good grade. She literally just looks for things to pick on with my kid. My son had a 100% in French, literally, last time I checked. This personal bias against a student (She is not this picky with other students.), or putting a student's grade on the line due to maybe having a bad day? Unacceptable, absolutely.
