Teacher Complaint: Stacey Bowen - John Hersey High School
Ms. Bowen, I have no doubt that your intentions are good, but you have clearly overstepped your boundaries as a counselor and violated student rights. You've made promises to some students and not followed through with them. One of the students you counsel was suffering from depression due to trying to get over a death in their family. This student had quite a large support network of family and friends, all of whom were trying to help this student. Without the permission of this student or this student's family, you forced this student to spend several weeks in the hospital, undergoing a special schooling arrangement and getting emotional help. You also labeled this student as being depressed and suicidal. Upon this student returning to Hersey, you kept harassing this student and bugging them as to how they felt. They'd tell you they felt fine, but you kept trying to get them to say they were depressed. More recently, this same student was gone for a week with strep throat (which is contagious). This student's family had their doctor send a not confirming this student had strep throat. When this student felt better and came back to school, you called them down to your office and kept trying to force this student to say that they weren't gone due to strep- it was because they must have been depressed! You even admitted that you didn't believe the note this student's doctor sent to your school confirming that the student had strep throat. This student politely told you that if they were depressed they would be getting help for it, but that depression wasn't why they were out of school for a week. How dare you do this to a student! How dare you treat a student like they're a depressed, lying, evil person! Just because a student is trying to deal with a family member's death in their own way and has a network of support consisting of family and friends doesn't automatically give you the right to label them as depressed and suicidal and force them into a hospital, where they'll get special accommodations to try and help them! That's not your decision to make. It's up to that student's family to make that decision. Also, if a doctor sends the school a letter saying that a student has strep throat, you better believe that note. Doctors almost never right notes about their patients that contain lies. Why? It's unethical for them to do so. And, for the sake of all the students you promised things to, please, keep your promises! It will show how mature you really ought to be. You are an adult after all.
