Teacher Complaint: Dr. Kenneth Ender - William Rainey Harper College
In the almost four months you've been President of WRHC, you've made tons of promises. You've promised to talk to local businesses and make WRHC more prepared for the 21st century. So far, I doubt you've done either of those. It's clearly evident in classrooms all across the WRHC campus. If you did talk to local businesses, you would have found out that many of the things in your classrooms were way out of date. All across the country, white boards are being replaced with Smartboards, a device similar to a white board, but which allows teachers to do the things they do on a white board electronically through a computer connected to an overhead projector, which displays the teacher's work on the Smartboard. Even the computers used on campus are obsolete. They're running on the 2003 version of Windows XP and use Microsoft Office 2007. Since those programs have come out, Microsoft Office 2007 has been discontinued due to all of its problems and has been replaced with an upgraded version of Microsoft Office 2003. Windows XP has been replaced by two operating systems since it came out: Vista and Windows 7. While I don't expect WRHC to have the latest, most up-to-date in technology, I expect WRHC to at least get some real 21st century technology and to be more up-to-date than it is. You also promise that WRHC will think boldly, challenge the status quo, and advance new and innovative solutions to help students reach their goals in today's ever-changing world. Instead, what I have seen is WRHC doing more of the same old garbage that other Illinois colleges are currently doing. People aren't thinking boldly, if they're even thinking at all. Very few are challenging the status quo. Also, what new and innovative solutions are there to advance and to help students reach their goals? There are none. They're non-existant at WRHC. You also state that classes are small and personal and that the faculty at WRHC are passionate about their teaching. I don't know where you got that information from, but the only parts of those two statements that's correct are that the faculty is passionate and that classes are small. Classes may be small, but they're far from personal. Some of the teachers are extremely rude and condescending towards students. Many faculty members are passionate, but not necessarily about their teaching. Some teachers barely speak English. Some teachers are passionate about sabotaging, "fudging," and changing student grades a few weeks after the grades were due to be turned into the appropriate people. This has happened to countless students, and when the students complained or looked into the matter, they were met with an "I don't know what happened" or with a refusal from the department head, the dean of their major's department, and the professor for their class to change the grade to what it should be. They're corrupt, but instead of being punished for their actions, it's the students who are paying the ultimate price. Their parents won't send the students back to WRHC if they don't get good grades. If this continues to be the case, years from now, if anyone asks if WRHC is a good college, people will say, "What WRHC?" WRHC will cease to be like it is now, and it's already hurting due to the current recession. If you want to make an impact, get rid of the problem faculty members and replace them with people who will love their jobs and do their jobs well. Make sure the replacements help students, not hurt them. I know of one division you can start cleaning out. You can start cleaning out the CIS (Computer Information Systems) division. They're corrupt. They purposely "fudging," sabotaging, and changing students' grades a few weeks after they were supposed to have turned them into the appropriate people. This causes CIS majors and students in CIS, CAS, NET, and WEB courses to leave WRHC because of bad grades. The CIS division's corrupt deeds are starting to leak into other divisions, which causes even more students not to return to WRHC because of bad grades. It's time to hold people accountable. WRHC can't afford to rest on its laurels anymore. Students, parents, and the communities WRHC serves won't stand for it. It's time to clean up WRHC and bring it into the 21st century, where it belongs.
