Teacher Complaint: Mr. Kaltenbach And Mr. Caras - Northmont High School
Our son is a senior at Northmont and recieved a Saturday school for being tardy to class. The Saturday was assighed the day after Christmas break was to begin.
It had snowed the night before, roads were slick. He was ready to go but,thought he should check the TV and online to see for closings. No closing. He called the number given him, you have a 15 minute window, no answered. He called twice, no answer. We thought best for him to stay home.
On returning to school Monday after break he was suspended for three days for a no show. I met with the administration the next day.
Mr. Kaltenbach told our son he should have left a message. We never knew there was an answering machine. We found out after I called the school after hours, just to see. Sure enough, the machine picked up after 11 rings. Eleven rings! I have never in my life let any phone ring 11 times.
To Mr. Kaltenbach's and Mr. Caras's surprise they did not know it took 11 rings either.
The paper they send home to inform parents of a Saturday gives no mention to a recorded message, no mention to poor weather conditions.
Yet, they feel we should know these things. The staff, I was assured, was not at fault. Both gentlemen were adamant someone was there the entire 15 minutes. Neither Mr. Kaltenbach or Mr. Caras was there. There was no proof given that the office was staffed that morning in that 15 minute window. It's because they say it so, makes it so.
I have heard that students have been left standing outside waiting on a teacher to arrive. Late. To a Saturday session. I did not state that to them at any point. It would have been useless.
Our son is out for three days. After doing what he was told to do. The other end failed to do their part and he suffers for it.
It was made very clear to me, that if we approach administration again, I will be wasting our time. This was not the first time we have had an isuue with Northmont. All I can say is, make sure every student, parent and grandparent read the handbook, it is vital and it is law.
